PNOC-Alternative Fuels Corp. (PAFC) recently signed an agreement with the Ilog Diversified Multi-Purpose Cooperative and Katilingban Sang Katawhan Sa Katayoyon Nga Kauswagan Sa Kabankalan Inc.(5K) to establish a 1,000-hectare jatropha curcas plantation in Negros Occidental. Jatropha Curcas is a very hardy plant that grows easily on infertile ground and its seeds could be used to make biodiesel.

Freedom from Debt Coalition (FDC), represented by Wilson Fortaleza, said that with the passage of the Electric Power Industry Act (EPIRA or Republic Act No. 9136), it hastened corporate control over the whole power system and results in “sweetheart deals” between energy distribution companies and power generation companies. This is because the law allows power distribution companies to own power generating companies.
The example he pointed out was that between Aboitiz subsidiaries Davao Light and Hedcor. Davao Light owns electricity distribution rights in Davao City, while Hedcor is into power generation.

Global Biomass PLC Corp. (GBC), a UK based company, has signed a 25 year contract to supply three power plants with biomass. GBC will harvest the biomass from farm waste. Specifically corn, rice straw, sugar cane and other farm residues.

The Philippines and Brazil recently inked a pact to cooperate in developing alternative energy sources as well as stop protectionist trade measures and increase further bilateral trade between countries.
The Philippines could learn a lot from Brazil because they are looked upon as the world model for bioethanol use and production. Brazil had developed their bioethanol industry to point that it sustainably fuels their transport sector. The bioethanol industry in Brazil uses sugarcane as their feedstock.

Toyota Motor Philippines revealed that the price of the local variant of the Prius will cost a whopping P2.5 Million due to importation taxes.
The Prius is called a hybrid vehicle because it uses both a 1.8L gasoline engine and a nickel-metal hydride battery powered electric motor to propel the vehicle. When the batteries are fully charged it switches to the electric motor resulting in savings in gasoline.
