Congress once again failed to pass a bill to help arrest the population growth that is spiralling out of control. Major reason why all population control measures get waylaid is because of the opposition of the very powerful Catholic Church to artificial means of reproduction control because of the right to life and the belief that children are a blessing from God.

Bioethanol Producers seek review of Bioethanol ImportationExecutive Order 449 that was signed by President Arroyo in 2006 reduced the import tariff on bioethanol from 10 percent to one percent so as to facilitate the compliance of the country to the Philippine biofuel law because local production of bioethanol was not enough to meet the country’s fuel demand.

The Biofuel Law mandates a certain percentage of bioethanol being mixed with the gasoline being sold at the pumps. In order to comply with this, oil companies are allowed to import bioethanol till the local production of bioethanol is sufficient to meet the demand. Importation of bioethanol however is to be controlled and monitored by the DOE (via the National Biofuels Board) so as to not harm the local producers of bioethanol.

Bidding for Angat Hydro Electric heats up



The battle for the privatization of the 246 MW Angat Hydroelectric Power Plant in Norzagaray Bulacan gets competitive as major players announced their intent to join in the public bidding that is going to be conducted by Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management Corp. (PSALM).

Those conglomerates who expressed their intent to bid for the project were the Ayala Group (in partnership with Metro Pacific Investments Corp.), San Miguel Corp., Aboitiz Power Corp, and the Lopez Group’s First Gen Holdings Corp.

Tuna Ranching - Commercial Farming of Blue Fin TunaBecause of its delicious taste, the Blue Fin Tuna could well soon be an extinct species because of the threat of over fishing due to the high demand for its meat.

Directly affected, aside from the Blue Fin tuna, are those who rely on harvesting it for their livelihood. Right now there are reports of temporary laying off of workers in canneries due to the low supply of tuna that can be fished. Due also to the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC) reigning in their fishing boats by putting a ban on the fishing of tuna in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean in order to allow the tuna to replenish itself.

These power projects are said to be in various stages of development. Some of which are conducting feasibility studies, others are seeking funds, while others are doing market analysis. With this, it would be safe to assume that there could still be a probability of these projects not pushing through.
