U.S. Energy Information Administration said that Ultra-Low Sulfur diesel will be available in US within this month (Oct 15). They also said that there is ample supply of this ultra low sulfur diesel. Manufacturers have already begun production of the ultra-low sulfur last June 2006.
This meets the US Environmental Protection Agency’s requirement for 15PPM of Sulfur or Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD). Compared to the existing Low-Sulfur diesel which has 500 PPM of Sulfur.
I am assuming that the next step in this is the retrofitting of existing diesel engines with Catalyzed Diesel Particulate Filters which is said to be able to reduce Particulate Matter in Diesel Engines by 90%. The filter works only however if your Diesel Engine has a Sulfur content of 15 PPM
Well, we’ll find out after 2 weeks if the fuel pumps of those diesel engines don’t conk out. Reducing the sulfur content in the fuel lowers the lubricity of the fuel which could lead to fuel pump failure. It might be a good idea to add some biodiesel, which is a known lubricant to the fuel to increase it’s lubricity, just in case you want to be safe.
