Lohachara and Suparibhanga Island, found in the Sundarbans delta have been swallowed up by the sea due to the increasing sea levels caused by global warming. What started three decades ago had ended with the islands being totally submerged in the latter part of 2006.
With this occurance, the world has been introduced to a new grim word: Environmental Refugees. As inhabitants of the island had to be resettled in adjacent islands. The sad news is that those adjacent islands are themselves not free from sinking into the Bay of Bengal as they have also started having their land areas decreased.
The debate however, is whether the island vanished due to increasing sea levels or due to erosion caused by increased salt content brought by oceanic currents.
