You were probably thinking that we were talking about heavily mutating Charlie Brown and the entire Peanut Gang, but no this is about the American Peanut Council and the Peanut Foundation giving the “Go” signal to scientists to start conducting experiments on genetically altering peanuts. The entire project is estimated to cost around $9.5 Million.
A group of 14 university, U.S. Department of Agriculture and food industry scientists, including Ozias-Akins, prepared a report on biotech peanuts and presented it recently to the Peanut Foundation. The scientists concluded the technology could reduce growing costs, improve nutrition and overall quality for consumers and have the potential to reduce the allergy threat in peanuts.
This could in a way be a starting point for Peanuts to be considered as a feed stock for biodiesel production, that is considering that we get higher yields and more vegetable oil per hectare/year.
