es_logo_3.gifThe US Environmental Protection Agency is developing standards that will judge servers as being energy efficient and will therefore be granted an EnergyStar Certification.

So what is the significance of buying an EnergyStar Certified product? Aside from the personal high of knowing that you are making good use of energy, you are also entitled to tax credits from the IRS.

This is quite a good move from the EPA. Considering that servers, which run the internet are “On” 24/7 and are therefore gargantuan consumers of electricity. But the server makers have long touted their new energy efficient servers in their marketing campaigns long before the EPA came out with this proposal to give EnergyStar ratings to servers. The simple reason being, that your average data center operator would prefer a server that consumed less electricity to benefit their bottom line.
