I got this post from Alternative Energy News that announces about a site that will allow members from around to world to buy and sell carbon credits. This is quite a novel idea as it marries the speed and convenience of the web with the newly emerging carbon credit market, put taking it also to a more personal level as they connect with individual consumers and not just entities.
They are pitching it to be the next Google because of the revenues that could be earned trading carbon units, in line with this the company also announced that they have patented their site.
From the Site:
Celsias is the first online community that allows regions, businesses or community groups to be paid for reducing the carbon emissions from their everyday energy use.
How it works is that you, as an individual, business or entity, input your energy expenses and source of energy into the site, then they will compute what your carbon footprint is. Users can then gain credits by reducing their carbon footprint (energy reduction or by using more efficient products.) With the credits you gain, you can then sell it on the site’s trading market.
I am curious as to how they will monitor that the users are in fact doing their share in reducing their carbon footprint as well as ensuring that the credits aren’t resold in other carbon-credit markets. Similar to the problems that Google is facing in terms of “click-fraud”, “Carbon-fraud” could be a big issue that the company could face. Not that I am against them, I am pretty much for this novel idea of theirs, I just hate to see a good concept go down in flames due to unscrupolous members cheating the environment and other people out of their money.
The site is projected to go live by the early part of 2007 (Q1 I am assuming.) Registration is free and can be accessed through here.
