300px-state_of_the_union.jpgWas watching CNN’s coverage of US President George W. Bush’s State of the Union Address. One topic addressed was how he intends to address the issue of global climate change and oil dependence. The main target is to reduce imported gasoline usage by 20% by the next 10 years. This will hopefully reduce by 75% the total oil imports in the United States.

Proposals Made :

  1. Implement a mandatory 35 billion gallons/year renewable fuel usage by 2017. This is 5 times the current standard.
  2. Reduce further by 8.5 billion gallons/year the consumption of fuel by adding laws that will require stricter fuel efficiency standards among vehicle manufacturers.
  3. Step up domestic oil production.
  4. Double the capacity of strategic petroleum reserves

Off Topic: This is also the first time in history for the President to address the Speaker of the House with the title: “Madame Speaker.” Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi is the first female Speaker of the House in American history.
