The Philippines is experiencing an uncustomary cold season brought about by cold winds blowing from the North Pole (video here). I don’t think you have to be a genius to notice that this is due to global warming.
Temperatures in the Capital (Metro Manila) have dropped to 18C. The worse is in the summer capital of the Philippines, Baguio City, known for it’s cool climate, they are experiencing 11C temperature resulting in vegetable crop loss due to freezing (video here). This resulted in an incremental increase in vegetable prices in Manila. I’m wondering if it’s really because of the crop destruction or the media hype? Middlemen like to take advantage of the public chaos to justify price increases.
Here in the island of Mindanao where I am based the weather now is quite cool, quite a relief from the usual warm weather. But what I’m worried about is the coming summer. Mindanao, being an agricultural based economy, suffers very much from El Nino effects and ensuing droughts.
Studies show that the GRDP (Gross Regional Domestic Product) of the Mindanao Island is tied directly with the performance of the weather. Why Manila should also be worried is because we supply 30% of the country’s food supplies. So here’s to hoping that the weather stays the same as last years summer (March to June) in the Philippines.
