According to the Global Wind Energy Council, totalglobal wind power generated capacity is now at 74,000 MW. For 2006, 15,197 MW of windpower capacity was added worldwide. Heading the list of countries with the most windpower generating units are Germany and Spain, with the United States coming in Third. India and China are the only 2 Asian countries who made the top 10.

In Asia, China doubled it’s previous years installment of wind generators while India continued it’s pace by adding a whopping 1800 MW of additional Wind Power. Japan, Taiwain and South Korea were the only other countries that added additional wind generating capacities in 2006.

Wind Power is one of the most cleanest alternative energy sources, but the drawback is looking for the correct geographical location where one can maximize the harnessing of the power of the wind. Not to mention that one has to build one’s wind mill high enough so that it can take advantage of the more consistent flow of wind at high altitude (30 ft is the minimum height for a tower.) Some companies however have been able to come up with innovative ways of tapping winds at even higher altitudes.
