014_kobold_in_sea.pngThe San Bernardino Strait in Northern Samar (between Samar Island and the Bicol Province) is to be the location of a wave power array which will benefit the residents of the coastal areas.

The project will be funded by the Italian Foreign Ministry and will cost €300,000. The project is expected to start on the latter part of the year when the turbines arrive. Construction is expected to last a year.

010_kobold_quark.pngThe array will use Kobold turbines to harness the power of the waves movement and convert it to electricity.

Wave power (different from tidal power) is sort of an enigma, it started its development in the early 70’s due to the oil crisis and via the initiative of Professor Stephen Salter of the University of Edinburgh. The Edinburgh Duck was the machine he developed that could harness 90% of the power of a wave. Public interest waned however when the oil crisis died down.
