Soon to be tested in New York is Joe Hagerman’s idea of planting the roof with a motley of pollutant filtering plants, filters, gravel and concrete. This novel idea is hoped to help reduce pollution in the city. If that takes off, we could be seeing a new Urban Jungle… Literally! I wonder how many carbon credits you can gain from this one?
Plants, and the soil they grow in, act like a sponge to capture excess rainwater, limiting runoff that would otherwise flow into overburdened, leak-prone sewer systems. Certain plants also have the capacity to filter out pollutants through a process called phytoremediation.
