180px-floridaserversfront1.jpgI just found out today that 1.2% of the electricity consumption in the US was due to data centers and the massive arrays of servers and cooling equipment that they hold (45 billion kilowatt-hours of energy were consumed in 2005).

Worldwide figures say however, that data centers account for about 0.8% of the total global energy consumption. And the other bad news is that between 2000 and 2005, the total number of data centers doubled. These figures were taken from a study commissioned by AMD and was reviewed by major server companies as well as Intel, IBM, Hewlett-Packard, Sun, and Dell.

prinnbg.jpgOne of the main authors of the recently released IPCC report, that stated that humans are 90% likely to have caused global warming was interviewed by MIT’s Technology Review. He discussed in the interview the methods and modelling techniques that they used in order to come up with the conclusion that humans are the main contributors to Climate Change.

Great article here from MetaEfficient on the best rechargeable batteries of 2007.

That’s why I love rechargeable batteries, for the very fact that you can use it more than once. Meaning that it will be worth its cost in energy in relation to the energy needed to dispose of it.

Please don’t forget however to practice responsible disposal of rechargeable batteries

I posted last week that India was looking to biofuels to power its cellular network base stations in remote areas. This is to extend the coverage of their cellular networks and provide communications in rural areas.

Now in Africa, Motorola is planning on setting up a cellular network that will be powered by solar energy and a wind generator. It is now being trialed at UK and will soon be deployed in Namibia. They are also hoping to deploy this nifty technology in Asia.

With the high cost of fuel, UK’s elderly are having a hard time paying for their heating bills with their pension money. Resulting in having to cut back on the use of heaters or scrimping on other expenses in order to pay the heating bill. What’s sad is that, those who really need the heating because of their frail age can’t afford it.
