I got a welcome message in my inbox today that informed me that the draft rules for the Automotive X Prize have been released already.

COMPETITION REQUIREMENTS

The AXP will challenge teams to design, build and demonstrate vehicles that are super-efficient and production-capable, not concept cars.

Requirements include:

  1. Energy and emissions – Vehicles must achieve significant energy and emissions goals, most importantly in fuel economy, with at least 100 Miles per Gallon or its equivalent (MPGe).
  2. Production capability – All vehicles must be designed to reach the market. They will be judged on specific market criteria detailed in key areas: safety, cost, features, and business plan.

VEHICLE CLASSES

Teams can compete in two vehicle classes – Mainstream and Alternative. The Mainstream vehicles will carry 4+ passengers with 4+ wheels; Alternative vehicles will carry 2+ passengers with no minimum wheel requirements. Both classes have the same requirements for fuel economy and emissions, but have different design constraints.

Draft rules are available here.
