Here’s an interesting bit of news. It turns out that long ago Scientists have been making wagers against each other on the outcome of the environment (And who said nerds never had vices?) Literally putting money where their premise,… err mouth is. An online betting site has taken it to another level by allowing us commoners to have a piece of the intellectual betting action.
Just to name a few, bets are being taken on whether: Polar bears will become extinct by 2010, Manhattan will be under water before 2011, A water powered car by 2008… etc. They seem quite far off though, your money would end up sitting with the bookies for such a long time. The chance of you losing your claim stub would be even greater than the chance of those events ever happening within the year.
For short term wagers, those not wanting to wait till 2010 and above, I’d suggest betting on the following topics instead:
- Global warming exists beyond any scientific doubt.
- Humans caused global warming
- The ocean will rise six inches by the end of the year
A little slightly off-topic: It turns out that Prince William and his girlfriend, Kate Middleton, have broken up. They were betting on that one too.

I’ll take the 6″ bet for $100 bucks. No way it’ll happen.
