sm.gifAccording to Victor Agustin’s column, Cocktales, SM Supermarket in the Philippines will soon use reusable polypropylene bags in lieu of the existing plastic shopping bag.

Way to go SM! Plastics are notorious for harming the environment because they don’t degrade over time. Another interesting thing about plastics, is that they are made from Oil, hence when the price of Oil goes up (which it has these past few months) so does Plastic. So switching to something reusable is not only environmentally friendly but also practical.

I just hope that the customers take it in a positive note. I think however that they will be able to break this paradigm given the clout of SM over the Philippine Consumers. Case in point, they were greatly responsible for helping stop the proliferation of Sexually-oriented Movies in Philippine Cinema. They did this by not allowing these movies to be shown in their cinemas and with them owning most of the Malls in the country it effectively stopped this industry trend of producing cheap and quickly made movies designed to make a quick buck.

Ever since I started this blog on Alternative Energy I have to admit that it has made me more conscious of my actions with the potential impact it might have on our environment. For instance, whenever I buy small stuff in a convenience store I don’t bother to ask for a plastic bag to carry my stuff in anymore. When we do our weekly grocery, I usually ask them to box my groceries instead of putting them in plastic bags (yep, the bag boy’s in our city can actually box your groceries for you). When it can’t be helped to use a plastic bag, I make sure to recycle them for future use at home. At work, if stuff can be done online or via phone I usually opt for that, rather than having to use my car to reach people I have to interact with. Simple things like that, when added all up, can spell a difference for our environment.
