unep-logo.gifThe 5th of June has been slated by the United Nations General Assembly as World Environment Day(WED). It was initially marked by the assembly way back in 1972. This years slogan is “Melting Ice – a Hot Topic?.”

On this World Environment Day, let us examine the state of our environment. Let us consider carefully the actions which each of us must take, and then address ourselves to our common task of preserving all life on earth in a mood of sober resolution and quiet confidence.

A category 5 hurricane (that’s a typhoon to those who are in my part of the hemisphere) is on its way to Iran and Oman and packing maximum sustained winds of 257 kph. Bad news for us but most likely good news to the people who like to speculate on the price of oil. And I feel that there’s just enough drama in a typhoon in the middle east to drive the price of fuel up. The tropical Cyclones name is Gonu… as in “Gonu see the price of oil go up now…

The plant is estimated to cost P8.5 Million and will produce about 20,000 liters of biodiesel a month. It will also be supported by a 100 ha. jatropha plantation which will cost about Php 4 million. This was reported by Mr. Alejandro Teves Escaño, president of the Philippine Chamber of Agriculture and Food.

200px-carpool_poster.jpgFor Shame! My own home town bans one of the easiest methods of reducing carbon emissions. In other countries they even provide carpool lanes in the freeways in order to encourage people to carpool. In my previous company we even had preferential parking slots to members of registered carpools.

The main reasons behind this ban is because carpooling is used to drop off kids at school, is not regulated with safety laws and therefore does not require one to have the necessary insurance coverage.
