A few posts back I quoted the Cocktales Column for their article on SM Supermarket issuing Recyclable bags in lieu of plastic ones. I finally got a first hand look of these bags courtesy of our Google Country Consultant [click on the image to enlarge].
Basically … you get a free recyclable bag for every PhP500 worth of purchases and then whenever you use it when you go grocery shopping, you’ll get extra points in your SM Advantage card [source]
Way to go SM Hypermart! I wonder if they can apply for carbon credit points for this initiative? *snicker* Well even if they don’t the upside of this act are:
- Helps reduce Foreign Oil Consumption by reducing plastic use(yep, plastic comes from oil in case you didn’t know)
- Reduction in operating costs by not having to buy those dreadful plastic bags as part of your consumables
- Reduction in storage space. If I could describe the volume of space that bales of plastic bags must occupy in a supermarkets warehouse. “Towering” would probably be an apt word to describe it.
- No more nightmares of TV news segments featuring children suffocating on a plastic bag with your logo on it *yeah this is too gothic a thought*
Of course the purist environmentalist would insist that the bag itself be made of recyclable materials, but in my book, that’s good of an enough effort from SM Hypermart. I hope other supermarkets would follow suit.
