Jatropha CurcasPNOC president Peter Anthony Abaya said that there are entities interested in purchasing the potential carbon credits that can be generated by the PNOC-Alternative Fuels Corporations Jatropha Plantations. Three of the entities he mentioned were EcoSecurites, Mitsubishi Securities of Japan and the World Bank.

PNOC-AFC is expecting to generate $70 million annually from the sale of carbon credits or roughly $100 per hectare from their targetted 700,000 hectare plantation this year.

Because of the Kyoto Protocol signed by UN members, businesses which have exceeded their allocated carbon emissions have a right to buy carbon credits from certified carbon credit brokers to offset their emissions. Likewise, businesses who have generated carbon credits have a right to sell them. Yep, this is the decade of the eco-capitalist.

As the years progress, ideally the carbon target emissions will be lowered ensuring that the price of a carbon credit will go up as the demand for it increases. Because of this, aside from the sale of biofuel feedstocks to processors, farmers can also earn from by selling the carbon credits they are able to produce by embarking on this green project. They first have to get in touch with a carbon credit broker so that their farm can be assessed for its carbon credit potential.

Also mentioned in the article was PNOC-AFC’s MOU signed with Korea Technology Industry Co. Ltd. (KTI) for an investment of $210 million for the development of jatropha. Included in with the plantation is the construction of a Jatropha refinery in the Philippines. KTI will put up a minimum of $5 million to $20 million for initial expenses then another $150 million for the 75,000 ha. of jatropha plantation within two years. An additional $60 million will be used for the 300-metric ton biorefinery to be put up by 2009.
