SM Davao’s Department Store and Grocery will begin using Oxo-Biodegradable Plastics (OBP) shopping bags tomorrow. OBP’s are conventional plastics but with an added proprietary mixture that speeds up the breakdown of the chemical structure of the bag. The resultant products of the breakdown are then easily converted by micro-organisms to their food or into carbon dioxide and water.
SM has also stated that their OBP bags aren’t harmful to the environment because the active ingredient used to speed up the breakdown of the plastic is a transition metal salt (often of cobalt) and its levels are very low. They said that studies have proven that composts made from oxo-biodegradable bags are not toxic to the environment, most especially to both plant and animal organisms.
Aside from that, SM also offers the SM Green Recyclable Bag. Which a customer can buy from them and is allowed to be brought in and out the grocery and department store area. Instead of having to store your bought items in the plastic bags, they can be stored instead in the Green Recyclable Bag.
Great effort from SM as always when it comes to the CSR work for our environment.
