Spain is credited in Philippine History as being our former colonial masters. Magellan, who circumnavigated the world under the flag of Spain, was the first to discover the Philippines (although the Chinese have already forged trade routes to the island.) They also brought Christianity to the islands and were responsible for making the Philippines the only predominantly Catholic country in Asia. The Philippines itself was named after King Philip II of Spain.
