Senator Migs Zubiri wants to appeal the ban on conversion of rice lands to biofuel producing areas.
Right now, we are hitting a certain snag because of a moratorium of conversion of lands in all agricultural areas. Several investors want to put up biofuel plants but they are facing difficulties in land conversion.[source]
For the measly 25 hectares that these biofuel producers are asking Senator Zubiri’s help in, I think they should be more sensitive to the food crisis gripping the country right now. And not to mention that this contradicts Senator Zubiri’s call for biofuel feedstock planting in marginal land only.
Some old corporate farm hands in Mindanao were telling me before that corporate farms in Mindanao were once required by the Marcos government to plant a certain hectarage to palay based on their land holdings. Maybe that should be taken into consideration right now for biofuel producers who have large tracts of land.
