Flying V, the Philippine Gasoline company and not the Guitar brand, is pouring some money into discovering how to convert the coconut waste product known as “sasa” into ethanol.
Flying V is known as the first oil company to introduce biodiesel into the Philippine market. I like where they are going, it increases the biofuel yield from the coconut tree by getting two end products, biodiesel from the coconut oil and a byproduct of bioethanol.
Of course the thing to be looked into is the net energy consumed and the recovery yield when converting this waste product into ethanol. Whether it will be more costly than the potential energy to be extracted from.
