Makati Mayor for Life, Mayor Jejomar Binay, announced that two locally built electric jeepneys will begin their service of the city this coming July 1. The two vehicles will complement the China built e-jeepneys that have already been servicing the uber-posh Bel-Air Village. The first week of operation for the locally built e-jeepney will be totally free of charge.
If the locally built e-jeepneys prove viable, they will have 50 more units built.
The projected route of the E-jeepneys will be:
In Salcedo Village — from Dela Costa St. turn right to Makati Ave., right to Paseo De Roxas, right to Villar St., left to Leviste St, left to Rufino St., right to Ayala Ave. and right to Dela Costa St.
In Legazpi Village — from Salcedo St. turn right to VA Rufino St., left to Adelantado St., left to Gamboa St., left to Salcedo St., left to Benavidez St., left to Paseo De Roxas Ave., right to Legazpi St., left to Dela Rosa St., and left to Salcedo St.
Jeepneys have been the backbone of Philippine transport. It was originally built from the world war II jeep left behind by the Americans after the war. Decades have passed and the jeepney is still being used on the road. The only difference is that the modern chassis design incorporates surplus engine, suspension and transmission parts from Japan. The body is still hand crafted using sheet metal and a welding machine.
