Guimaras Oil Spill Aftermath
It will be almost two years since the MT Solar (prophetic name?) Oil Tanker sank off the coast of Guimaras Island on August 11, 2006 resulting in the worst oil spill in Philippine history. Down with it went almost 2 Million liters of bunker fuel. 500,000 liters of which spilled out into the sea while the remainder being left in the downed tanker.

I was watching a segment on the news the other day with regards to children having to carry over weight textbooks and notebooks in their bags when going to school. The doctor interviewed says that as a rule of thumb, kids should only carry between 2-3 kg on their backs.

Recalling my own childhood I remembered having to carry more than that. Of course to me it really wasn’t a problem because my house was nearby and the whole trek with full gear lasted not more than 8 minutes. So I feel sorry for those kids who have to carry those heavy books much farther.

In order to combat global warming, Philippine Department of Education Secretary, Jesli Lapus, penned Department Education order No. 33, directing all public and private schools to conduct annual tree-panting, tree-growing, and tree-caring activities in their campuses and nearby communities. Also in the directive was an order to not cut down any trees in schools.

Boracay, one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Philippines owing to its fine white sand beaches that seem to stretch ages, promised to go a little bit greener as different stakeholders on the island signed a manifesto in support of making the island a little bit more climate friendly.

This project titled “Save the Climate, Save Boracay” has been a Greenpeace South East Asia initiative with the help of the municipality of Malay, Department of Tourism, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Boracay Foundation Inc, Boracay Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Mother Earth Foundation.
