The Philippine Land Transportation and Franchising Regulatory Board, which governs the Public Utility vehicles in the country, has allowed some transport groups to use old surplus Auto LPG engines instead of the mixed diesel-LPG that was intially proposed.
I guess this comes right after the Philippine Department of Energy announced that they were sceptical on the viability of a diesel engine running on a partial LPG mix (30%LPG 70% diesel). Especially when it comes to the safety part
This is way much better than the DOE’s recommendation to convert diesel engines to spark ignition. A diesel engine weighs more than your regular gasoline engine because it needs thicker walls to handle the high pressure that compression ignition engines need to generate combustion.
The added weight will just breed more inefficiency and higher fuel consumption because Auto-LPG experiences power loss during high rpms. Add to that, Auto LPG systems consume 15-25% more than regular gasoline systems. It’s just the price of LPG now that makes it more economically viable than either gasoline or diesel.
