The Grocery store I shop in doesn’t offer a green bag like another popular grocery here. But unbeknown to them they had long been in the “Green” company club by offering consumers the option of having their groceries boxed instead of using plastic bags. The boxes used are the old boxes that their goods are stored in when it gets delivered to them by their suppliers.
You’d be amazed with the speed with which the baggers can tie a box together. Considering too that the bottom is unsecured, its the method of tying that ensures that the box is securely wrapped up tight so that it doesn’t disintegrate when you transport it. With the experienced baggers, its possible for them to join two boxes together to form one big box to put your groceries in.
The great thing about it is that the boxes are free, but that isn’t necessarily true for all groceries. I had the sad experience of having to pay for a box from a grocery store before when I needed to pack some stuff.
Having your groceries boxed instead of bagged solves a lot of problems, such as:
- All your groceries fit in one box unlike having to carry it in multiple bags.
- Gets rid excess bags that grocery store can quickly accumulate.
- If ever you need a cardboard box to store stuff in you’ll always have some handy in the house
In a way this also helps reduce their need to purchase plastic bags for their customers, so it greatly affects their bottom line. The only thing un green about their boxing however is their use of plastic rope to tie the box together. If they could use natural twine that could be much better.

This is great. It has the advantage of having no additional power embodied in it from its production (unlike biodegradable plastic bags.
I guess another step would be to bring your own rope?
