Fiery Philippine Senator, Miriam Defensor - Santiago has filed a bill seeking the re-opening of the controversial Bataan Nuclear Power Plant. Filed as Senate Bill 2665, which mandates the immediate re-commissioning and commercial operation of the Marcos era Power Plant.
A little check in history will show that that project was riddled with so much anomalies due to massive graft and corruption that it was once decided to convert it to another type of power plant (oil, coal, etc) instead of trying to fix its problems. Eventually that idea too was scrapped because it would come out more expensive compared to building a new power plant using conventional energy.
So where this bill will go no one will ever know. But it follows the tune of the Department of Energy looking into reopening the power plant for commercial production.
I just wanted to correct the statement to the press where she said that:
Given the increasingly prohibitive costs of the present sources of energy and the unreliability of wind, solar and other alternative sources, there is a need to revisit and utilize the nuclear power option,”
Solar and wind power are already proven technologies in harnessing energy from renewable energy sources. Countries have already adopted them to add energy to their national grids. And the great thing about them is that they don’t generate toxic and radioactive waste and in the event of a plant failure don’t end up causing huge tracts of land to be radioactive wastelands.
