Here’s a great set of video’s created by Graydon Blair over at expertvillage showing how one can go about making biodiesel for personal use. In a nutshell, making biodiesel is a process of putting catalyst to vegetable oil that will product a chemical reaction resulting in the separation of biodiesel from glycerin.
I do recommend not relying on just this information. It would be good to use the search engines and check for the possible caveats that people have experienced when they tried creating their own biodiesel. All these information was found on the web without guarantees, so please use at your own risk.
If you have the resources, it would be great to test the biodiesel in a spare diesel engine rather than the one in your car, so if something is goes wrong, at least you won’t lose your personal transportation in the fallout. One other alternative is not to go 100% biodiesel in your car so that there is still a factor of safety while you improve your mix.
I do also caution going around and selling the biodiesel you make, since the Philippine Department of Energy gives accreditation to biodiesel processors so that the public can be assured that the biodiesel they put in their car is fit for consumption.
The inputs used when making biodiesel are:
- Vegetable Oil
- Methanol
- Lye
- Isopropyl Alcohol
- Distilled Water
- Heater with Stirrer
- Acidity tester
