Moringa Seed for BiofuelSpeaking at the Mindanao Investment Conference, Secura International Corporation president Danilo Manayaga presented the many benefits of the moringa plant that his company has been putting into commercial use.

Moringa, known locally as “malunggay/malungai“, is said to have multiple uses, aside from its more popular use as a milk production stimulant in breast feeding mothers. It is also known as a very hardy plant, similar to the more popular Jatropha Curcas, as it practically grows rapidly and easily in the Philippine landscape.

Secura, is a biotechnology company in the Philippines who has been deep into research on commercial applications of the moringa plant. They have a Moringa Oil Manufacturing Plant in Marawi City that is producing biofuel out of moringa seeds.

Properties highlighted by Mr. Manayaga of the Moringa plant are:

  1. Moringa oil is edible and closely resembles olive oil in its fatty acids composition. The oil content of seeds ranges between 30 to 40% by weight.
  2. It is rich in monosaturated fatty acids, it is believed to be more stable to oxidative rancidity. Also, it is stable as deep frying oils and is usually healthier as it lowers risk of coronary heart disease.
  3. They believe that the plant could help solve poverty and malnutrition. Also since it can rapidly anywhere in a varying range of climatic condition.
  4. Moringa meal or the residues left after water extraction of kernels has high amounts of true protein.
  5. The malunggay meal water extract can be used for purification of water, and the water extract is a viable replacement coagulant for chemicals such as aluminum sulphate. The cationic polyelectrolytes neutralize the colloids in muddy or dirty water since the majority of these colloids have a negative electrical charge. This protein can then be used as non-toxic natural polypeptide for sedimenting mineral particles.

with your article, my brother & I thought of our land be planted of Moringa trees aside from being a usual coconut plantation. I am really amazed with the multi use of MOringa plant. If only it is taken into consideration, its production and all, forsure our country will be sufficient with fuel and also the problem of malnutrition and finances will be addressed. Thanks a lot for posting an article about it.It broadens my perspective on the importance of Moringa plant and the vision we have for our land.
