Want to convert your car to a hybrid? Well according Ulrik Poulsen, you can with just between $4000-$9000. He’s selling hybrid car conversion kits for regular gas powered vehicles.

The basic kit will cost about $3500 initially and will include 2 Poulsen Hybrid motors, Auxiliary Components/cables and 2 brushless DC motor controllers.
There are also two options for batteries:
- A 72V 120Ah Deep Cycle Lead Acid battery pack (6 batteries) worth $400 to $450 and will require the purchase of an optional $300 On-board charger, 72V, 10A.
- Or you can go for the 4.3 KWh Lithium Ion battery pack with battery management system and dedicated 25A charger but will cost approximately $4,500 more
The design, whose patent is currently pending, basically entails retro-fitting electric motors on your car, along with DC motor controllers, a battery pack and an on-board charger. According to the literature on the site, ideally you have to have a car with 15″ wheels or more for the system to be installed. It doesn’t matter too whether your car is front or rear driven. Kits are also model specific so you have to wait for a conversion kit to be made available for your car.
According to their site they have joined the automotive xprize contest, having signed and submitted their initial letter of intent. They have yet to make their formal notice of joining so that they can be officially listed as part of the registered teams. As of this date there are already 18 registered teams.
