Saving Electricity in the HouseEver since I’ve started this blog I’ve been more energy conscious than I already was. The drive to reduce our electricity and lower cost has been taken up like a religion for me. It all started with doing an energy audit of the house and reducing our electric bill by about 40% by getting rid of energy hogs or replacing appliances with more energy efficient ones.

Cooking wise we’ve switched to an electric stove since LPG prices were going sky high on us. We’ve also lowered our footprint by limiting our car use to just once per week, when we have to do groceries.

The OC in me checks around the house at night when everybody else is in bed to see if there are any appliances still running. And since I’m usually awake at the crack of dawn, I turn off the outside lights right away. Vice versa, when somebody turns on the lights during the day when there is still some visible light, I make sure to turn it off.

Our last major change was switching rooms in our house to a more cooler one. It’s a bit smaller than the master’s bedroom we were staying in but at least we get to save on the use of electrical appliances.

The one I’m most proud of is our discipline in grocery purchasing. We buy just enough to stock our fridge. Because too much and you end up overloading the fridge which will force it work harder to keep things cool. Too little and you end up having to go out to purchase again. Of course in times of impending disaster one should always make sure that your cupboard is amply stocked.

I guess the other good thing we got out of this, aside from the lower bills, is the acquisition of the discipline to conserve. Despite the economic down turn the whole world is facing right now which is causing the price of energy to plummet, I wouldn’t want to be lulled again into this false security of “cheap energy forever”, so I’ll still continue this practice of being energy and consumer conscious.
