The Department of Energy (DOE) announced 6 windpower projects that are lined up for 2009.
2009 Windpower Projects in the Philippines
The announced wind projects for 2009 are:

  1. Energy Development Corp (EDC) - EDC has a pending application to develop wind energy resources in Nasurot and Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte. EDC is studying the possibility of putting up a 140-megawatt (MW) wind power facility in Ilocos Norte. 42MW will be the initial capacity of the station.
  2. Northern Luzon UPC Asia Corp. - A little snag was found with UPC Asia’s application because it was found out that they had overlapping areas with EDC. They plan to develop two sites also in Pagudpud which will have a capacity of 100MW. UPC Asia is a subsidiary of the UPC Group of Europe.
  3. Constellation Energy Corp. - Is a US firm that is studying two projects in Ilog, Negros Occidental and Bais City, Bayawan, Tanjay and Pamplona in Negros Oriental.

The best places for wind power projects in the Philippines are found in the islands of Batanes, Babuyan Island, Ilocos Norte, Mindoro, Samar, Leyte, Panay, Negros, Cebu and Palawan which can generate an estimated 7404 MW of electricity. This is according to the Wind Energy Resource Atlas of the Philippines and the World Wide Life fund. The Renewable Energy Coalition of the Philippines however projects a 76,600 MW of windpower potential for the Philippines.
