The Department of Energy (DOE) signed a wind development contract with Alternergy Philippine Holdings Corp, to study to feasibility of setting up a wind farm at Caliraya in Laguna, Pililia in Rizal and Abra de Ilog in Occidental Mindoro. Former DOE Secretary and current Philippine WWF head, Vincent Perez Jr, is associated with the said firm.
Alternergy joins Energy Development Corp (EDC), Northern Luzon UPC Asia Corp and Constellation Energy Corp in having been awarded contracts in 2009 to study and assess potential wind sites in the Philippines.
According to data gathered by the Renewable Energy Coalition, during their drive to pass the Philippine Renewable Energy Bill, the Philippines has 76,600 MW of wind energy potential.
A recent study by Stanford Professor, Mark Z. Jacobson, pointed out that that the best renewable energy solution for the United States would be wind power. This is due to wind energy having a better than 99 percent reduction in carbon and air pollution while consuming less than 3 square kilometers of land per turbine.
