According to the Department of Energy (DOE), there are about 24 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses plying the capital of the Philippines to date. Those buses are able to use CNG, sold at P14.52/liter, to power their engines.
The DOE is targeting to accredit more bus operators to run CNG powered buses so as to bring the total number of CNG buses to 185. A total of seven bus operators where recently accredited, four of which were issued certificates of authority to allow them to import CNG buses.
The buses are currently traversing the Cubao-Batangas/Laguna-Cubao provincial route. These buses fuel up with CNG from Shell’s station in BiƱan City in Laguna or from it’s main station near their refinery in Tabangao, Batangas. The DOE is expecting two more CNG refilling stations to be put up in the city by 2009.
The Philippines is a country abundant with Natural Gas found in the Malampaya Natural Gas fields off the coast of Palawan island. Through the government’s Natural Gas Vehicle Program for Public Transport, they are aiming to use the natural gas to power public transport vehicles.
