Continental Airlines, fourth largest airline in the United States, successfully conducted a test flight on a Boeing 737-800 with one engine powered by a Jatropha Curcas mix.
The no-passenger flight lasted 1 hour and 45 minutes and originated from the Bush Intercontinental Airport.
The experiment conducted was a joint effort involving Continental, airplane maker Boeing Co., engine makers GE Aviation/CFM International and biofuel specialist UOP, a unit of Honeywell International Inc.
UOP also provided the jet fuel for last month’s test of an Air New Zealand commercial flight powered by a Jatropha Curcas mix.
The main hindrance of using jatropha for airlines right now is the supply of jatropha curcas seeds in the world market.
