PNOC-AFC setting up jatropha farms in LeyteLeyte, the front door of almost all typhoons entering the Philippines is targeted for jatropha propagation by the PNOC Alternative Fuels Corp (PNOC-AFC). About 100 hectares worth of land is what they want to fill with jatropha curcas which will eventually be used for biodiesel production.

In line with this they had already set up a 10 hectare jatropha plantation with about 25,000 jatropha seedlings in Barangay (Village) Capinyahan in Naval town, Biliran province. They are soon to sign a memorandum of agreement with 18 farmers in the village to care for the plants. Seeds harvested from the plants will then be sold to the government. At that time squash and corn seeds will be given to the farmers so that they can intercrop it with the jatropha for additional income to them.

According to PNOC-AFC they are aiming for a countrywide total of 700,000 hectares worth of biofuel plantations by 2012.
