Publicly listed Alson’s Consolidated Resources (ACR) proposal to move their 24 hectare bioethanol distillery farther off from their previous site proposal was rejected by two groups opposed to the said project. The initial plan called for the setting up of the processing plant near the towns of Bayanga and Mambuaya.

ACR’s bioethanol investment in Cagayan De Oro was estimated to be about P2.1 B and would produce about 100,000 li/day of bioethanol.

Kagayan Watershed Alliance (Kawal) and Gising Barangay Movement (GBM) said that ACR’s new location would still endanger the two rivers of Tagpangi River and the Iponan River. Add to this, that the two rivers are within the 3000 ha. watershed zone of the city. Industrial waste from the production plant was to be deposited at the river of Tagpangi, which also interconnects with the Iponan river.

Both groups proposed that the plant be situated instead in the Phividec Industrial Estate in Misamis Oriental but ACR countered that they would be far from the Cassava producing regions of Bukidnon if they moved there. ACR was planning to use Cassava as feedstock for their bioethanol production plant.

Earlier this month, Kawal and GBM found an ally in the Catholic Church’s Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro, who also expressed opposition to the establishment of the bioethanol plant in that area.
