The combined protest action of the Catholic Church and Environmentalist groups against the bill filed by Cong. Mark Cojuangco to reopen the mothballed Bataan Nuclear Power Plant had over 2000 attendees coming.
The event was both a Prayer Rally and a protest action. The gist of the message of the report shows the stance of the group opposed to the reopening of the power plant to be:
- That the money to be allocated ($1 B) for the reopening can be put to better use in other projects (such as schools and hospitals.)
- Those guilty of enriching themselves from the construction of the failed BNPP have yet to be caught and tried.
- Those who seek to open up the power plant again can be deemed as enemies of the poor, because they are doing this to enrich themselves.
- Foreign experts have stated that the BNPP is unsafe for operation, aside from its defective construction is the fact that it is located in an earthquake prone area.
