Summer is the time when kids are out of school and have a lot of time on their hands. Some families invest in summer schools for their kids, to keep them busy and occupied during the summer. I was one such kid, as my father never wanted us idle during the summer, so he had us attend such classes as drawing, speech, speed reading and even short hand writing.
Of course when I got to high school I put an end to all of that because I was tired from the much gruelling study load of highschool and just wanted to spend my remaining summers sleeping. I also believed that there really wasn’t that much to learn from summer school since it was just a short course. But yeah that’s just my opinion.
The memories of summer school suddenly crossed my mind when we were having a discussion with a family friend on summer school for our kids. She had wanted her’s to attend summer school so that her child would get used to other kids in a school setting. So that when the time came for her to attend regular school she wouldn’t have a hard time adapting to normal kids.
It seemed like a good idea. When we saw her a couple of weeks later, we asked her how the summer classes were coming along. She mentioned that she decided not to send her kids anymore to summer school. It was because she got worried with the heat of summer affecting her kids since they were going to be kept in a classroom all day long. Not to mention that as pre-schoolers there wouldn’t be that much classroom lectures going on but more on physical activities for the kids to keep them busy. Since the school didn’t have airconditioning she decided to not enrol them anymore since physical activity and the heat would tax tremendously their small bodies.
I’d have to say that it was a very astute observation on her part to take into account the weather. What with the local weather bureau predicting 40′C temperatures this summer and the hottest day for 2009 already being set last April 15., its better to be safe than sorry.
