Philippine elections is about a year off but both political aspirants, government, religious and other sectors are mobilising for the historical event. One such group, the EcoWaste Coalition, calls for minimal waste and pollution during the campaign period for all candidates. In a small ceremony at COMELEC HQ last Wednesday, “Zero Waste 2010 Elections” was initiated which aims to exhort all election stakeholders to heed the plea for reduced campaign on waste and pollution.
Most political candidates will spend lavishly to get him or her elected. Although the COMELEC usually designates specific areas where the candidate can put up posters, in order to reduce pollution and vandalism of private property (yeah, some over eager supporter pasted a candidates poster all over our neighbor’s wall once), the rallies, events and campaign materials still contribute greatly to the leftover waste.
Recently joining the group were Bishop Deogracias Iñiguez of the Catholic Church and Commission on Elections (COMELEC) Commissioner Rene Sarmiento who advocated the groups stand for “Zero Waste”
EcoWaste Coalition also gathered support from the Miss Earth Foundation. Because of which their event was graced by pageant winners. These were Miss Earth 2008 Karla Paula Henry, Miss Philippines-Earth 2009 Sandra Seifert, Miss Philippines-Ecotourism Adie Adelantar, Miss Philippines-Fire Patricia Marie Tumulak, Miss Philippines-Air Michelle Martha Braun, Miss Philippines-Water Catherine Loyola, and Miss Philippines-Earth finalist Kirstie Ann Babor.
Other groups joining the event were Buklod Tao, Cavite Green Coalition Concerned Citizens Against Pollution, EARTH UST, Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives, Krusada sa Kalikasan, Mother Earth Foundation, November 17 Movement, Sanib Lakas ng Inang Kalikasan, Zero Waste Recycling Movement of the Philippines.
