Brazil and Philippine Ink pact for bioenergy consultationThe Philippines and Brazil recently inked a pact to cooperate in developing alternative energy sources as well as stop protectionist trade measures and increase further bilateral trade between countries.

The Philippines could learn a lot from Brazil because they are looked upon as the world model for bioethanol use and production. Brazil had developed their bioethanol industry to point that it sustainably fuels their transport sector. The bioethanol industry in Brazil uses sugarcane as their feedstock.

The Philippines meanwhile is still developing their biofuel industry after jumpstarting it by passing the biofuel law in 2007 that mandates the mixing of biofuel at the gasoline and diesel being sold at the retail pumps.

Of course the irony of this is that Brazil recently discovered in their backyard one of the world’s largest oil deposits. The oil discovery is said to contain about 5~8 Billion barrels of light crude oil. Hope this doesn’t breed complacency in their bioethanol use.
