Went to my local National Bookstore to purchase a pen to replace my old one. Since it was the only thing I bought, the cashier asked me if I still wanted a plastic bag for it. To which of course I said “No.” then she gave me the receipt and I tucked my purchase in my pocket.
I was happy that National Bookstore got into the conserve plastic bags mentality. I remember during my college days my friend made the mistake of opening up his National Bookstore purchase within the premises of the store, on his way out he had to show the guard his receipt and correlate it with his purchase to make sure that it wasn’t stolen.
In most cases, the plastic bag is not meant only as a convenience for carrying, but as a security measure for ensuring that the product had been paid for already. I can sympathize with stores though, because it really is so easy to steal stuff from them given the volume of people coming in all the time.
But its not just National Bookstore, some establishments also ask if you would want to do away with the plastic bag. On some cases I volunteer to not ask for the plastic bag anymore. In my own little way I feel that I’m helping heal mother earth, or stave off our annihilation just a little bit.
