Last year the Japanese Anime Franchise: Gundam celebrated their 30th year anniversary. It is no doubt the most popular Japanese anime franchise spanning over 30 years comprising of different anime series, spin offs and alternate universes that have made it into a billion dollar cash cow for its mother studio not only in video sales but specifically in merchandising.
The iconic robot figure known as the Gundam was the primary protagonist in each of the series. But aside from the story of triumph of good over evil there is the sub-message of the earth being burdened by the existence of man.
Long before the topic of global warming and the harmful effects of the burning of fossil fuels had on the planet earth made it to the front page of the news, the Gundam series had already made it a plot point in some of their anime series the need for man to abandon the planet earth in order to allow for it to recover from the harm that has been inflicted on it by the activities of man.
Of course one can’t but help notice how the franchise had also helped contribute to the garbage problem owing to its commercial success. But there were reports that they were doing their part to lessen the environmental impact of their plastic model production facility.
Famed theoretician, Stephen Hawking, himself has spoken of the need for man to push for space exploration because of this.
If the human race is to continue for another million years, we will have to boldly go where no one has gone before…It will not solve any of our immediate problems on planet Earth, but it will give us a new perspective on them and… Hopefully, it will unite us to face a common challenge.
Earth is a finite resource, if we are to survive and to continue our staggering population growth we have to aim for the colonization of space and the technologies needed for this. We could file this as but the necessary next step in the evolution of man. If people find this objectionable and costly, then the other alternative is a more series Global Population Control program to stop this uncontrolled growth.
