The CIIF-Oil Mills Group (CIIF-OMG) said that there is enough coconut oil available to support the Philippine Biofuel Law’s requirement to increase the mixture of biofuel in the diesel fuel at the pump by 5% this year. According to them 5% is just 350,000 metric tons of crude coconut oil that equates to 23% of the current annual production capacity of the Philippines.
In line with this they also announced that they had initiated coconut tree replanting program together with the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) so as to meet the 10% requirement mandated by the biofuel law by 2015.
They also said that together with the PCA they are implementing a coconut pest management program in the 32 provinces to ensure that the existing coconut trees will continue to bear fruit. A few years back it was announced that the Philippine Coconut industry was under attack by the Coconut Leaf beetle that affected drastically coconut oil production.
