Alsons Consolidated Resources Inc, a member of the Alcantara Group of Companies, has announced plans to construct two ethanol distilleries in the island of Mindanao in the Philippines and also possibly a biodiesel refinery.

The first facility will be put up in Cagayan De Oro and will have an initial capacity of 100,000 li/day. The second facility will be located in Sarangani province in Southern Mindanao.

Sugarcane for BioEthanolThe Department of Energy(DOE) contested Sen. Migs “Mr. Biofuels” Zubiri’s claim that they weren’t doing enough to attract investors to the Philippines to setup biofuel processing plants.

DOE Sec. Angelo Reyes said that there are already about P12 B worth of projects lined up that will produce 240 million liters annually in support of the 223 million liters/year demand of a 5% bioethanol mixture in petrol by 2009 as mandated by the Philippine Biofuels Bill.

PNOC-AFC general manager Clovis Tupas refuted earlier reports that the PNOC-AFC and UK NRG partnership to setup $1B worth of Biofuel Facilities fell through due to UK NRG finding another local partner.

The reason behind the move was because PNOC-AFC failed to meet UK NRG’s requirements. Earlier this week an official from PNOC-AFC, quoted anonymously, said that the said MOU will not push through because of the above mentioned reasons.

Well whether its a go or no go, we’ll find out next week when the two companies meet up to discuss their MOU.

Sugarcane for EthanolWith Bronzeoak’s San Carlos Bioenergy Inc. (SCBI) bioethanol plant, in San Carlos City in Negros Occidental, being the only ethanol distillery being constructed in the Philippines right now. Philippine Sugar Millers Association’s (PSMA) scientific director, Archimedes Amarra, said that the government might have to delay the mandatory 5% bioethanol blend for gasoline by 2009 as stated in the recently implemented Philippine Biofuels Bill.
