180px-cut_sugarcane.jpgLast year we reported that Central Azucarera de San Antonio(CASA) was planning to build a $1.6 B Bagasse fed powerplant with 14MW capacity. It has been announced that this power plant is ready to start selling their excess 5MW to the grid come November when milling season starts.

The plant will operate from November to March during Sugar milling season and can extend operation till April. CASA also announced that they were planning to increase the capacity of the plant by another 12MW.

cfbulb_brightli.pngA few weeks back Grant Thornton International revealed the results of their survey to find the most energy conscious countries. They found out that the Philippines was tops when it came to Energy Conservation.

83 percent of businesses in the Philippines have undertaken energy reviews to understand how they may be wasting energy, compared to the global average of only 58 percent. Likewise, 85 percent of businesses in the country have reduced their energy consumption, in contrast to the 59 percent average worldwide.[source]

Some notable stuff that happened last week for the environment:

  1. US House removes subsidies from Oil Companies as well as imposes a “conservation fee” from those who extract Oil from the Gulf of Mexico. They are also hoping to recover lost royalties from lease rentals issued by the Interior Department. All income gained from this bill is targetted to develop the alternative fuel industry of the US. That is the opening salvo for the war against foreign oil dependence.
  2. Stephen Hawking warns on the Catastrophic effect of Climate Change.
  3. BusinessWeek writes that companies going green could have more than just PR as a benefit.

I’m very happy to notice that the Philippine Biofuel Sector has been very active this week with the signing of the Philippine Biofuels Act of 2006 by President Arroyo. A lot of movement in the local industry as well as media.

Bush promised in his State of the Nation Address to fund renewable energy projects to fight America’s addiction to Foreign oil is nowhere to be found. The cause being: Congress passed a stop-gap resolution to keep the budget at 2006 levels.
