30 Years of Gundam

Last year the Japanese Anime Franchise: Gundam celebrated their 30th year anniversary. It is no doubt the most popular Japanese anime franchise spanning over 30 years comprising of different anime series, spin offs and alternate universes that have made it into a billion dollar cash cow for its mother studio not only in video sales but specifically in merchandising.

Hold the PlasticWent to my local National Bookstore to purchase a pen to replace my old one. Since it was the only thing I bought, the cashier asked me if I still wanted a plastic bag for it. To which of course I said “No.” then she gave me the receipt and I tucked my purchase in my pocket.

I was happy that National Bookstore got into the conserve plastic bags mentality. I remember during my college days my friend made the mistake of opening up his National Bookstore purchase within the premises of the store, on his way out he had to show the guard his receipt and correlate it with his purchase to make sure that it wasn’t stolen.

Palawan's Mt. Mantalingahan now a protected area

Thanks to Proclamation 1815 signed by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo last last June 23. 120,457 hectares of land in Palawan island was transformed into the Mt. Mantalingahan Protected Landscape. Included in there of course is 6,800 ft Mt. Mantalingahan.

The proclamation includes provisions for protection of the area that include resource management, scientific monitoring, and zoning system. Also included are provisions for water and soil conservation and flood control.

Asian Development Bank adds The Asian Development Bank (ADB) announced that it is implementing the “Safeguard Policy Statement” that will help mitigate the environmental damages any of its projects might bring. This move was approved by the ADB board last Monday. The said policy has provisions on biodiversity conservation, community health and safety, and physical cultural resources.

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines’ (CBCP) once again reiterated its position on the reproductive health bill pending at the House of Representatives as that of being unchanged in its opposition to it. Sorsogon Bishop Arturo M. Bastes, SVD, said in an interview that “the CBCP will not change its position on the RH bill because its provisions are anti-family and anti-life.”

He explained the bill is against the teachings of the Catholic church “especially protecting life in abortion” and people have been told of the involved issues.

SE signs accord to protect Coral TriangleSouth East Asian leaders signed recently the CTI Coral Reefs, Fisheries and Food Security (CTI-CFF) aimed “to address threats to the marine, coastal, and small island ecosystems within the Coral Triangle region through accelerated and collaborative action, taking into consideration multi-stakeholder participation in all of our six countries.”

The Coral Triangle is known to hold 75 percent of all aquatic species of the world. It is located in the waters of Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Solomon Islands and Timor Leste. If anything were to happen to that area, the world’s fish supply would be greatly threatened. Corals reefs are known to be breeding grounds for fishes. The most common way of protecting them is to limit access to them. Sort of a like a wild life reserve on water.
