Heherson Alvarez Presidential Adviser on Climate ChangeFormer Dept of Environment and Agrarian Reform Head, Heherson Alvarez, was appointed presidential adviser to the President on Climate Change. Aside from holding cabinet level positions, he was also a former senator of the Philippine Senate serving in 87 and 92.

I’m not sure how presidential advisers go, but I think they hold rank and privilege similar to cabinet level officials. I’m not sure either if they have to go through the Appointment Committee’s of the Legislative branch in order to be approved. Either way, his previous positions qualify him enough for his current job.

In order to combat global warming, Philippine Department of Education Secretary, Jesli Lapus, penned Department Education order No. 33, directing all public and private schools to conduct annual tree-panting, tree-growing, and tree-caring activities in their campuses and nearby communities. Also in the directive was an order to not cut down any trees in schools.

According to the Celsias blog, Global Warming is causing this increased earth quake activity that we see in the news today. Glacial movement in Greenland due to the melting ice is causing world wide earth quakes because they are rooted deeply into the earth’s tectonic plates.

glob-may-pg.gifSo I went on over to the National Climatic Data Center and pulled mean Ocean and Land temperature data. Afterwards I went to USGS and pulled their historical earthquake data. I found some very interesting correlation with regards to this concept.

An Inconvenient TruthThe Academy Award Winning Documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, will be shown on April 22, 2008 on HBO in the Philippines (it starts at 8PM, but that is depending on what part of Asia you are in). This ties in with the celebration of Earth Day for 2008.

Philippine FlagThe Philippine Presidential Task Force on Climate Change (PTFCC), the National Power Corp (NAPOCOR) and the Department of Education of the Philippines signed a memorandum of agreement which paves the way for the integration of the topic on Climate Change to the Science Curriculum of the Primary and Secondary levels (Signed last March 31.)

The MOU specifically aims to integrate in the school curriculum the subject or topic on climate change. In this way, the government will be able to instill in the Filipino school youth the value and significance of climate change and its impact and consequences.[source]
