One turbine at the Lincolnshire wind farm had one of its blades knocked off and another damaged early Sunday. Considering that a turbine blade is about 20m long, it could have taken considerable force to accomplish this feat.

UFO enthusiasts around the area however were insisting that it was an Unidentified Flying Object that did the dastardly deed. While County councillor, Robert Palmer, said he had seen a “round, white light that seemed to be hovering”.

Aftermath of New Year's Celebrations for 2009The first of News report of January will always be a collage of stories related to fireworks related injuries and property damage. Things were much different however than the previous year’s celebrations.

According to the DENR, it helped that the New Years Eve was greeted with rains as it reduced the effect of the fireworks induced smog over the country. Visibility however still went down in the roads of the Metro for a few hours. Compared to last year, there were lesser injuries related to fireworks. There were still some cases of properties burning due to stray fireworks and people getting fireworks caused injuries.

Ushering in 2009This will be the our first post for 2009. 2008 went by like a flash, but we’re happy that two monumental things happened that can give this world hope for a cleaner and greener future.

For the Philippines it was the passage of the Renewable Energy Law near the end of 2008 that gives monetary incentives to energy investors to develop and tap renewable energy sources to power the Nation’s grid.

Sen. Pia Cayetano calls for total ban of Endosulfan in the PhilippinesPhilippine Senator, Pia Cayetano, is calling for an enforcement of a ban on endosulfan from the Fertilizers and Pesticides Authority (FPA) as the exemption they gave to multinational agri companies will expire on Dec 31, 2008.

Cayetano said:

I hope that for the safety of our farm workers as well as the environment, the FPA would have enough political will to finally impose a total ban on the use of endosulfan, which they themselves ordered 15 years ago. Isn’t fifteen years more than enough time for these big corporations to find safer and more environment-friendly alternatives? There should be no more exemptions by the FPA, if we are to start the new year right.

Alternative to New Year FireworksIn the spirit of the New Year, here are some alternative ways to welcome the New Year without resorting to fireworks. The problem with fireworks in the New Year is that the amount being exploded is so excessive that it leaves a cloud of burnt gunpowder residue over the city contributing greatly to air pollution.

Of course I never understood why we have to use fireworks to welcome the New Year. The practice is taken from the Chinese custom that it scares away the demons, evil spirits and bad luck. That I can accept, but the reality is Chinese New Year isn’t till February, so go figure? So can’t we just admit that we just really love making things go boom and watching fireworks display?

Total worried that consumers will not buy bioethanolTotal (Philippines), the Small Philippine Oil player, mentioned their worry on whether the public will warm up to the idea of buying fuel with bioethanol mixed in them. Managing director Anna Whitehouse said to reporters that “The law tells us to do it, but the law doesn’t tell you to buy it.” Under the Philippine Biofuel Law, Oil companies are required to mix a certain percentage of their fuel with biofuels.
