Comissioned by the US Army, the portable biorefinery which is as big as a van, uses waste materials for its feedstock and outputs ethanol, methane and propane.
It is designed to run initially on diesel till the conversion process can create it’s own fuel source.

GE has been able to develop a procedure which will make development of Solid-Oxide fuel cells that uses gasified coal as a hydrogen fuel source economically viable. The main stumbling block of this technology has always been the high cost of production of the fuel cell.
The technology touts a 50% energy efficiency of energy conversion, compared to conventional power plants 35%.

CNET reports on some companies novel ideas to implement new wind methods of harnessing energy from the wind.
From balloons to kites, the technology tries to take advantage of wind velocity at high altitudes where the currents are said to be more efficient and stable.
Definitely these wind farms cannot be placed in locations where there is high commercial air traffic.

I hate to draw inspiration from objects of nefarious origins, but please just humor me this instance. Marijuana growers of Mexico have started planting a new hybrid of cannabis sativa that is resilient and quick maturing. The new strain is resistant to herbicide, reaches maturity within just 2 months and can be harvested year around. Compare that with the existing variety that can be harvested only twice a year and planted within a specific season only.
